Good Morning, Ireland!

So let's get this out of the way, shall we?  I haven't posted in a while because I threw my back out, then had a butt-load of work to do (as in jobs), then had a big family thing, then had to take the GRE, then started a new medicine, which totally knocked me out for a day.  Good things have happened too, though... so don't worry about an emo-licious blog!
So, one night, last week, my sister set off the alarm at around midnight.  I went up to see what happened and, on my way back down the stairs, I felt a pain that, quite literally, stopped me in my tracks.  I didn't get to job #1 the next morning, as I was laying, motionless and with a heating pad and lots of pain relievers, in my bed all day, but got up for job #2 in the evening, which proved silly, as I was walking at about the same pace as the seniors.  Have you ever felt the sensation of which your spine sort of feels like tapioca so it's not pain but it takes a ridiculous amount of effort just to stay in any kind of upward position?  When it wasn't painful, it was that.
So, my boss at the nursing home gave me 6 more hours of work every week!  And it's tax season so I have a lot more work at the accounting firm!  For those of you who think otherwise, I assure you that it's good news... especially for m bank account.
So, I decided a little while back to take a break from school (please don't ask why... if I wanted to tell you, I'd have already told you) and told my parents about it last week.  It went surprisingly well, probably because I was so set about it, but things have been a little eesh in the house since then.
So, I took the GRE.  I signed up for it about six months ago so... ya.  I didn't prepare for it at all, purely out of laziness and apathy, but woke up two days before it, panicking that I'd done such a (seemingly) stupid thing... I still did nothing, but this time, because I didn't have the time.  The day of the test was the day of North Jersey snow storm #2.  I walked in, wanting simply to walk back out, and nervously sat down at the computer.  The writing part went very well... I actually enjoyed it!  The verbal part went pretty well... I had to guess at quite a few things, which is ok.  The quantitative part went abysmally... I've never been very mathematically minded, so I took the "close your eyes and point" approach to about 90% of the questions.  Never fear, though!  Because it's on the computer and because the two sections are multiple choice, you get your verbal and quantitative scores immediately!  And guess what!  I did really REALLY well!  I got well above the average of all students and the average of philosophy students (that's my major) AND the average of education students (that's what I intend to attend grad school for)!  So, my advice?  Don't worry so much about these sorts of tests.  In fifth through eighth grade we had a test prep class twice or three times a week, preparing us for the entry exam into high school (this is only in private schools), and in high school we had another test prep class, preparing us for the SAT.  On top of that, both times, my mother purchased additional lessons for me and made me take them.  This time, I did exponentially better than both of those times.  If you want to prepare, get one of the prep books and take your own pace.  It doesn't even have to be the most updated version... I had gotten a book (that was practically untouched) and compared it to the updated version and there was practically no difference, so save your money.  Chill.
So, a while back, I tested positive for PPD, which means that I've come in contact with someone with tuberculosis and now I need to get those germs out of my body (picture mono... it can sit in your body without you actually having the disease for about a decade... this is the same thing except it's your entire life).  I have to take two pills per day for four months.  They knocked me out for a day, but everything is cool now.  Also, they make you cry orange because of a pigment in the pill.  So someone make me cry.  Seriously.  I think I'll look like a Gatorade commercial, but I won't know until it happens.
So... back to business!
I've only been practicing the uke sporadically, mainly because I haven't been able to hold it right because of my back, but I'm going to get back in fully today.  Because I'm sort of teaching myself, I get to do what I want, so I'm still working on fluidity before moving on, so I'm not looking down and stopping between every chord change.
I went to the gym last night and knocked myself out... it made me sad because I used to have a very good routine at the gym, and last night it took a ridiculous amount of effort to do half of that in the same amount of time.  Then again, it has been a year since I've done any real exercise.
I also made another goal for myself... a long-term goal.  I mentioned my friend Belinda and her blog, www.bellabonviveur.blogspot.com before and, if you haven't read it, I'll give a short summary:  she's never cooked before because her parents always did it for her, and, now that she's moved out, she has to learn how to cook for herself... very Julie/Julia, but very much her own (funny too).  I had decided, over the summer, to do more cooking, and I've done so, though not as much as I should like to.  One thing that I never liked (or tried) was eggs... I always thought that they look disgusting, but I've decided to dedicate some time to eggs.  I have quite a few cook books, one being The American Woman's Cook Book...

http://www.amazon.com/American-Womans-Cook-Book/dp/B000EHW6DS/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1294768227&sr=1-2
It was written in 1939 by Ruth Berolzheimer, and I happen to have the 1939 version.  Yay me.  In it are over 50 different recipes for eggs!  One is called "Robin Hood," which I'm very excited to try, if only for the name (I haven't actually looked at the recipe yet).  I am going to SUCCESSFULLY cook every version of eggs in this book.  I am also going to try every one.  There's bound to be one that I like.  I started last night with the poached egg.  Boil water, carefully pour the innerds of the egg into the water (without breaking the yolk), keep in the water for about a minute and a half, scoop off the fluff, and carefully scoop onto a plate (again without breaking the yolk).  Toast some bread, butter it.  Salt and pepper... voila.  I didn't like it, but I didn't not like it.  I'll eat it again because eggs are good for you, but I don't see what all the fuss is about.  And yes, I made it correctly... dad supervised.
Tonight, I'm going to try scrambled.
Another thing, before I move on... I saw Black Swan.  If you haven't seen it, do so, but beware... I had to sleep with the lights on... a quarter of the people in the theater walked out... the "no talking" rule was not abided by because everyone was freaking out for one reason or another.  It's an amazing movie and everyone should see it... once.  And then pack it away into the recesses of your mind and never think about it ever again.

The next parts of this blog are to be dedicated to three shows... Doctor Who, Primeval, and Lost.  I'll put "SPOILERS!" before every spoiler so it'll be your own fault if anything is ruined, but if your not into the shows, then end your reading here, because... abandon all sense of coolness and reality, ye who enters here.
Doctor Who:  Did everyone see the Christmas special???  Friggin awesome!  With the sharks and the Christmas Carol!!!  Dude!  And when he came up with the Christmas Carol, I was grinning like a madman!  "What's that in the background?"  "A Christmas carol."  "What?"  "A Christmas carol!"  "WHAT?"  "A CHRISTMAS CAROL!" *insert eureka face here*  And then Rory and Amy in the Roman/copper outfits the whole time... oh... my god.  The singing, I think, was the classic Doctor Who roll-your-eyes-and-just-ignore-the-ridiculousness bit, but yunno... take a deep breath and pretend that you know nothing about reality and it could make sense.  The girl actual is an opera singer, though so... coolio.
Primeval:  YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!  It's back!!!  We've waited so long and it's finally back!!!  It looks awesome and I can't wait to watch the second episode and I miss Danny Quinn and I'm still dancing about how Helen got eaten so yunno... am hating that I have to watch it online because I have to wait a day.  And YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! (SPOILERS!) They got together!  They really did!  I mean, obviously, it's been just them for so long so I guess it was bound to happen.  And I was afraid for a minute that Conner had gotten all tough and no nerd on me, but it all worked out for the best and the geek in him showed up.  I am pleased.
Lost:  I never watched it.  Never felt the need to.  Dom Monaghan was in it and that was my only incentive, but I never got around to it.  Until now.  I watch a vlog on youtube by Charlie McDonnel (http://www.youtube.com/charlieissocoollike) who is in a band/sharing a flat with Alex Day (http://www.youtube.com/alexday).  I started watching the latter more recently and one video was called "Lost in 3 Minutes," in which he explained the basic plot of Lost, in three minutes, via post-its.  I showed it to my Lost-obsessed friend Jill, and, subsequently, decided to start watching the show.  Originally, I had thought it was people crashing on an island, then doing nothing but screwing and killing each other until they got saved.  It's more than that and I hereby apologize to the world for thinking so blasphemously.  Of course, as I predicted, Dom's character, Charlie, is my favorite character. I'm right in the middle of season 2, so I'm going to attempt to explain what's happened so far... SPOILERS! are riddled within the following.  A bunch of people crash on a seemingly deserted island.  The main characters, in the first season, are Jack (a doctor), Kate (a criminal), Sawyer (a good-bad guy), Hurley (who's net worth is $150 million, but isn't so far revealed to anybody, or at least believed by anybody), Charlie (a base player for a dead band/heroin addict), Claire (who is pregnant), Locke (who was in a wheelchair, but was magically saved when the plane crashed and now he's more like a MacGyver/Crocodile Dundee hybrid), Sayid (a former "interrogator" for Iraq, who falls for Shannon), Shannon (a brat who changes and falls for Sayid), Boone (her brother who helps out Locke), Michael (who only just met his son), Walt (Michael's son), Rose (who's husband was on the plane, but we don't know where he is and she thinks he's still alive), Sun (a Korean woman who hides that she speaks English because she was going to leave her husband but decided against it and she doesn't want him to know), Jin (Sun's husband), and Vincent (a dog).  Yes, they're all main characters.  Basically, they find out that they're not alone on the island... that there're bad people and possibly a monster on the island who's trying to pick them off.  Jack becomes the leader of the gang pretty immediately.  Charlie and Claire are kidnapped by a man who pretends to be part of the group, but who is actually one of the bad guys who were on the island before.  Sayid finds a French woman named Danielle (also called Rousseau) who was stranded on the island sixteen years ago.  Charlie is almost killed and, eventually, Claire finds her way back.  Claire has her baby, but Danielle takes him (as it turns out, the bad guys took her baby way back when and she thinks that if she gives them Claire's baby-who's name is Aaron-then they'll give her back her daughter, Alex), but Charlie get's him back.  Boone and Locke find a buried hatch and try to get it open (it doesn't have a handle) and Boone dies along that "path".  Eventually, they get the hatch open.
That's season 1.  I'll explain season 2 when I finish with it.  A few things that you should know that I didn't really know where to put in... Kate (the criminal) is a good guy, Hurley has some sort of connection to bad numbers that keep showing up everywhere, and there's a polar bear on the island (the island is in the tropics) that I'm assuming has something to do with Walt, as they emphasize that Michael gave his a toy polar bear when he was little, and that a polar bear is a big thing in the comic book that he's reading.
Sorry if I missed anything.  Sorry if it ruined anything for you.  I told you there'd be spoilers.
See you next time!

Good morning, Czech Republic!

Got up this morning and went to work.  Set up for "mass" and started making morning snacks.  Corralled the seniors, brought them to snack, came back, watched the first half of Annie.  Break for lunch.  Walked across the street and saw that there were no sidewalks, or that they were, in fact, still there, but were covered in snow, and that the side of the street where one would normally walk in such a situation was all puddle.  Walked on.  Got to parking lot.  Only way to get through was to stomp through snow and brush or continue walking down treacherous road a decent amount further.  Walked on.  Called mom (who was literally about a block away, shopping).  Got new shoes.  Why?  Because I was wearing ballet slipper-styled shows (sans socks, of course) and snow/dirt/pebbles had gotten all up in there and I could NOT a) walk back in this or b) run around after the seniors in this.  Anyway... went back to work.  Actually ATE my lunch over the span of the next three hours.  Set up for our "Undecorating Party" (which went nicely) and put on the second half of Annie until all was ready.  Had our little party (told story of the Twelfth Night and its' history, handed out food, played music, did puzzles, and colored).  Cleaned up.  Played a bean bag toss, started a sing-along, collapsed into chair whilst the seniors watched news and prepared for dinner.
By "played a bean bag toss," I, of course, mean that I set it up, ran back and forth and squatted and bended to get the bean bags and did math and tried to make sure everyone was involved.
Why did I tell you this?  I just wanted to give you a run-down of an average schedule of my days at the nursing home (it's all that, minus the snow story, plus some more games, usually).  I only work there a few days out of the week and I love it.  I set up activities for the seniors (all of whom have some form of Dementia) and make sure that they stay as active as possible (i.e. not sitting in their rooms all day, every day).
Every day, though, there's a new adventure, whether Harry is screaming at the nurses for being "fat and useless" or Roger convincing one of the ladies to... come back to his room or Evelyn threatening to smack someone.  Something that's always fun (and very awkward) is when the gentlemen express their undying love and, quite often, propose marriage.  One man, one of my favorites (and, also, one of my "boyfriends"), named Ed, didn't come into program today, so I went looking for him to say hello when I had a chance.  I got an offer of... not marriage.
Just smile and walk away.  Then sigh, shake head, and look at a picture of Ewan McGregor.
Another "happening" of today which is going to bother me for a while... another man/favorite/"boyfriend" (by the way, they're ALL my favorites... I swear), Phocion, had his son come in today.  First of all, the man  doesn't look REMOTELY old enough to be his son.  Secondly, as soon as he walked in, I knew that I knew him... didn't think that I knew him... I KNEW... STILL know... can't figure it out though.  Grrrr...
Anyway, I came home and, meaning to lay down for only a few minutes, passed out for three hours, woke up, watched the long-awaited season premier of Primeval, and went to the diner with some friends.
By the way, how can guys spend so much time talking about cars?  Seriously... it was a little scary (and kind of annoying, though the actual CONTENT of the conversation-i.e. James Bond, K.I.T.T., how to build the batman car, Patrick Stewart's sexuality, etc.-was entertaining enough).
Came home, had a white chocolate strawberry.  Sleeping in tomorrow for a bit, then off to the other job (as a book-keeper) in the afternoon.

Practiced the uke for about ten minutes today.  Just went back and forth with the chords.  I'm doing ten minutes every few hours until I get it right and can move on to more stuff.  Have the two chords memorized and no longer have to look down at my hand to change properly... I just want to make the change more fluid.

Au revoir!

Good Morning, Brazil!

Happy New Year, world!  I hope your eve went well.  Mine was nice... wound up taking a bath, reading a book, and watching the last five minutes of the ball ceremony (NOT the one with the Snookie-ball) in lieu of going to a bar with some friends (who wanted to go hopping, which I don't really think is the best thing to do on New Years Eve)... lame, but nice.  Today, my family and I went to my Grandmother's house to support her (and eat pizza and cake) on my Grandfather's birthday, the first one after he passed away this summer.  I wound up getting sick for a bit, but it was nice to see everyone, especially the people that I didn't see at Christmas.

As per my first goal, I practiced the uke today.  I now know two chords (C and G7) and can play two songs (one of which doesn't really count) like a true beginner.  I don't think I'm going to go on to the next actual lesson until I've mastered the chord progressions thus far.  Tis fun, though.  I can't wait to do more with it.

Off hand, if you didn't see the BBC mini-series "Sherlock," then you've missed out.  I watched it online, in time with them Brits, and again when it came to the states, then received the DVD for Christmas, and, ring-a-ding-ding, watched it again this morning, with my father, who rather enjoyed it.  If I AND my father AND a bunch of other people around the world can enjoy it, then so can you.  It's three episodes of a modern-day Sherlock Holmes.  I know... it sounds like it wouldn't really work out properly, but it does, and is worked on by one of those wonderful Doctor Who boys (Stephen Moffat).  It stars Benedict Cumberbatch (who you probably have never really seen before, even if he's been in a few things that you may well have seen, like Atonement) as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman (who starred in the original Office series, as well as played Arthur Dent in A Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy) as Dr. John Watson.  Watch it.  Thank me.

Over the past month, on Facebook, I've asked my friends and "friends" a question every day in an attempt to get to know them better.  At the end of the month (today), I answered the questions there and shall post them here as well:

To all, feel free to answer these yourself in a comment or to pass it along as one of those tagging interview things.   Enjoy...

Welcome to my month of getting to know you... December 1, Question 1: High salary or job satisfaction?

Job satisfaction

December 2, Question 2: What do you think about yourself and do you think people perceive you in the same way?

I think I'm weird, but cool, laid back, but hyper and sometimes unbearable, smart, but stupid, shy, but loud, and fun

3, 3: Favorite book? Why? What's it about? Least favorite book?

My favorite book is usually the one that I'm reading at the moment.  Right now, I'm reading The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis.  It's really cool in that it's a children's book, yet it's really not at the same time.  I think my least favorite books are either anything by Stephanie Meyer (though, yes, I have read all of the Twilight series) or the Between-the-Numbers books (of the Stephanie Plum books) by Janet Evanovich.

4, 4: Which TV/movie/book/play/comic/etc. character do you associate yourself with most and why?

I really don't associate myself with characters, but I do find myself associating with a lot of stand-up comics (probably because it's their job to make you think to yourself one of two things: "Oh my God!  I think the same thing!" or "Oh my God!  He/She's out of his/her friggin mind!").

5, 5: What type of music do you like best? Favorite bands?

It depends.  I don't really listen to much modern music (or any music, really) regularly, though I do listen sporadically to Kid Rock, Good Charlotte,  Blink 182, 90s pop (purely for reminiscing and fun), and classic rock.  I do regularly listen to musicals and musical comedians (and sometimes TROCK) like the giant dork that I am.

6, 6: What type of movies do you like best?

It depends on my mood, but any movie that can make me walk out of the theater with a surreal feeling is good in my book (for example, True Romance, Black Swan, The Illusionist, Inglorious Basterds, etc... it can be of ANY genre)

‎7, 7: What makes you angry? How do you cure that anger?

stupid, ignorant people that don't listen or refuse to accept the possibility that they're wrong... yelling, breaking things, etc. (which I usually do in private/with my bff)

‎8: What is the best vacation you've ever been on?

oof... probably England, but then I had a fight with my h.s. bff... maybe a cruise, but then I got sea sick or had to spend too much time with my parents... maybe cape may, but... idk there're too many good times to choose from

9: What is your favorite thing to wake up to?

besides the obvious... silence? pancakes? Mmm-Bop and/or ABC?

‎10: Favorite sport?

BOXING!

11: If you could hang out with any three people (real, ficticious, dead, or alive), who would it be and why? What would you do?

Socrates, Jesus, and Mark Twain
runners up: Jean Valjean, young me, Charlie McDonnel, Stephen Moffat, Ron Weasly, William Shakespeare, Ben Barnes, Stephanie Meyer (so I could, yunno, kill her), Eddie Izzard, Oscar Wilde, Mohammad

12: What were you like as a child?

the same, but very different

‎‎‎‎13: If you could choose any profession (regardless of money and other such things), what would you choose?

actress

14: Are you a morning person?

I can be

15: If you could skip work for an entire day and do anything, regardless of cost, what would you do?

I'd go to Disney World and get a SUPER Fast Pass

16: Who's you're favorite blogger/vlogger (i.e. charlieissocoollike, That Guy With The Glasses, Dear Girls Above Me, etc.)?

chalieissocoollike, Dear Girls Above Me, That Guy With the Glasses, Bo Burnham, Bella bon Viveur

17: What is the craziest thing you've ever done?

told my parents the truth... or anything... ever... seriously

18: Name/describe one person you love the most and one person you hate the most.

Amanda: friggin awesome... no other way to describe her... no matter what she does, I will never hate her... you'd have to meet her to understand that no description, other than what I've said, could really do justice
Lois: mom, accountant, self-proclaimed goddess

19: Who was your first crush? Where did you meet him/her? What was he/she like? Did you ever tell him/her how you felt?

Justin Barnette... met him in the first grade... he was funny, quiet, nice, and cute... I don't think I ever actually told him, but I think the rest of my class may have

20: What are your three favorite places on this Earth?

Mohonk, WPUNJ (in my special-secret-hidey places), and Sea Bright (anywhere where my parents AREN'T)

21: About relationships... What establishes a full on serious relationship? Is there anything you disapprove of? How much of an age differences is too much of an age difference? What do you think are signs that "it won't last"? etc. etc. (basically just lay out your dating philosophy)

I don't disapprove of anything, really, so long as no party is being disrespected.  I used to not care about age, but it's not age so much as it is maturity... high school level shouldn't date college level, college level shouldn't date full-on profession level (unless, in all cases, they've been in the relationship from beforehand), otherwise it's like (and I know from humiliating experience), "yea come and pick me up, but don't knock because my parents are home and oh yea I have a curfew"... also if you're too sweet, you won't last

22: I have a problem with ABC Family's 25 Days of Christmas... a good portion of the films that they show HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH CHRISTMAS... If you were in charge, what are some Christmas movies that you'd like to see?

It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Love Actually, The Holiday, Charlie Brown Christmas, White Christmas, While You Were Sleeping, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jingle All The Way, Bad Santa, A Christmas Carol (any version), The Nutcracker (any version),  Home Alone, The Santa Claus, The Shop Around the Corner/You've Got Mail, Rudolf/Frosty/Heat Miser/all those puppety things (not the Muppets... the "it's one foot in front of the other... and soon you'll be walkin' out the door" and "I'm Mister Heat Miser... I Mister Snow!" and "this is the island of misfit toys" movies), Borrowed Hearts, and (sorry, but) all of the Doctor Who Christmas specials

NO... I wouldn't use A Christmas Story or A Muppet's Christmas or Nightmare Before Christmas because I think those movies are creepy... hate me if you must

23: What is your ideal gift (that someone would give to you; disregard price and need... what do you WANT)?

a ukelele... I didn't even know that it was my ideal gift, but when my dad gave it to me and I literally screamed and started hyperventilating like those Nintendo 64 kids (look for it on youtube... friggin hilarious), I knew

24: What's your favorite take-out/delivery food?

Dominos

25: Why do you believe what you believe?

because it makes more sense to me than any other belief system that I've thought about

26: If you could chose any country to live in for the rest of your life (and, NO, you can't choose any country you live in now/have lived in), which would it be?

England

‎27: If you could choose how you would meet your future spouse, how would it be?

something clever, memorable, funny, cute (but not too cute), and face-smacking

28: Do you trust people easily?

yes, and often to my own peril

29: Do you sleepwalk and/or talk in your sleep?

uh... yes

30: What bank do you use?

TD Bank

December 31, Last question: If you could ask people around the world one question, what would it be?

it would be "If you could ask people around the world one question, what would it be?"

Now, I'm going to have a brie and cracker and pepperoni sandwich, a chocolate strawberry, and some diet coke and a bunch of water, change into my pajamas (the attempt at doing so will most likely lead to me doing some laundry FINALLY), and watch Hogswatch, just in case you were wondering.
